First backstory - Last month, my sister, Bridget, and her family came to our digs to celebrate Oktoberfest. When Bridg and Randy make it to the DC area, we always make a big coffee run in the morning since Sam and I don't keep it in the house. Bridget and I decided to drive to Starbucks (Ah. Living in the burbs), while Sam and Randy hung the shelving in the dining room. During our drive, Bridg and I spotted a neighbor putting some items on the curb. Three of these items included some vintage military trunks. We both spotted them and, as we drove by, we started talking about how cool it would be to paint those bad boys and use them for storage. For some reason though, it was just sisterly chatter and we didn't make the stop. On our way back from Starbucks, we drove by my neighbors house again and some lady was pulling over to take a look. Without a second thought, Bridget pulled over and told me grab the trunks before the lady got them. I bolted across the street and then tried to look like I was calmly debating whether I would take one of the trunks, when of course it was inevitable that I was going to grab one. Sorry, lady. You didn't have a chance. In fact, I was greedy and grabbed two. (Unfortunately, once Oktoberfest was all said and done, I got some bad news. One of the trunks is locked and there isn't a key. I tried to fiddle with it using the small knife of a wine opener and a bobby pin, but its not giving. Sam's not giving up and has big plans to try a hammer. . . )
I wasn't about to let one trunk remaining locked stop me from completing a DIY project this weekend though. Nope, I planned to spray paint the other trunk, line it with some fun contact paper, and then store some blankets and pillows in it for use in the living room.
I debated what color I wanted to spray paint the trunk- fun accent color or a neutral? Ultimately, I decided that since we are still some time away from painting the living room, an accent color decision could wait. Plus, spray paint is pretty inexpensive, so we can definitely make a change to an accent color later.
For my neutral, I decided to go with Young House Love's spray paint obsession, Rust-oleum Universal
Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint, or "ORB" as Sherry likes to call it. It's a dark, almost black color with flecks of gold and bronze in it to give it a pretty shimmer.
I painted the trunk earlier this afternoon and its currently drying in the back yard. Here's a look at what I was working with:
As you can tell, the inside of the trunk needs some help. (It's gross, right?) I'm about to tackle it with some Clorox wipes and then see if the exterior needs a touch up before it gets too dark to keep spray paint it outside. Tonight, I'll put the contact paper inside the trunk and then I'll post all the details on how I made this trunk a sweet addition to our living room.
